More often than not, losing is more common so it's safer playing less lines. Secondly, if you're losing on the machine, you want to be on the 20-liner because it gives more chances to land a big win and you are losing less per turn, but if you're winning on the machine you want to be on the 50-liner because you will be winning a larger pot. The 50-liner requires you to hit something faster while the 20-line games have more chances on the player to win something smaller. On a 50 line games, it only provides 40 spins to hit something. Assuming that you don't win a single penny, when you put $20 into the machine, a 20 line game provides 100 spins to hit something. One aspect to think about is the chances to hit something big. 20 lines is the minimum needed to cover all possible next-to combinations, so if you bet less than that, you might has well forget it because it's like playing a $1 WoF or some 1/3/5 liner game. If I feel more adventurous I would play 50 line machines, but more conservative play is on the 20 line machine. The rule for me is, the more lines you have, the higher the volatility. But I have played different configurable WMS machines (1, 5, 9, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 lines). Click to expand.I'm not sure about newer games because I don't play them.
